Making an Advent Calendar

Every year December shows up and I don’t have a new DIY advent calendar.  I have an old, obviously loved, advent calendar that hangs on a door in my kitchen that has a little wooden star to move around to each of the 25 pockets. I do love it, but, I’ve always wanted to make my own cute little advent calendar with places to hide treats and notes.

Create Your Own Advent Calendar

I’ve made an advent calendar with mini paper gift boxes. I’ve also created a few printable AND cut files you can use to make your own mini gift boxes. So whether you have a Cricut or a pair of scissors, you are set… let’s start creating!

Fun Fact about the project: This printable project is also part of a fun group activity from years past. I’m Co-hosted, with the fabulous Vanessa Brady from Tried & True (love her art!) the Printing the Holidays blog hop and giveaway! We coordinated 20+ bloggers to share Christmas projects you can make using printables.

Now, I said I finally made an advent calendar… I haven’t filled the boxes with treats yet. That said, I have time! If you’re like me, and you’ve already missed December 1st, don’t worry. You can create a 12 days of Christmas Advent calendar and start with box 1 on December 12th (or December 13th if you go to the 25th)! So yes, you too still have time! I will be going back and filling all these pretty boxes. But for now, let’s enjoy the seemingly finished display together, shall we?

How to Make Your Own Advent Calendar

This printable kit is in two parts and some extras. The mini box comes in a free PDF you can print and cut yourself or use the SVG and upload to your Design Space account and cut with your Cricut. The little numbers are also available for free as a PDF and PNG. The PNG you can upload to Design Space and then convert to a Print the Cut design.

Materials

You can use the SVG file with your Cricut machine or another electronic cutting machine. Or you can print designs and use scissors. I vote for a cutting machine, let it do the heavy work while you sip your peppermint mocha!

Watch this video to see how I put together these cute little boxes.

Instructions

  1. Cut and assemble the mini boxes.
  2. Cut out accessory designs and number and apply as accents to each of the mini boxes.
  3. Fill each box. Tie it up with the ribbon and a create a bow with a little loop.
  4. String yarn or ribbon along the wall or a board.
  5. Clip each box to the hanging ribbon.

Optionally, you can stack the boxes or set them out on the mantel. These mini boxes would even be super cute as Elf on the Shelf gift boxes!

  1. I closed a window without following hapagirl and now I can’t get back there. I tried to search on Instagram but hapagirl is private with no followers and only 1 post, so I think I did something wrong… oops!
