32 reasons not to exercise

Written by: | Published: February 18, 2012 | Updated: August 10, 2015

I’m always talking about wanting to lose about 20 pounds. I’m sure I would feel better, be more happy with how I look and I don’t know what a third comment is, but I’m sure there is one. I have great intentions. I read a lot on what foods are best. I pay attention to the different work out options. I ask friends what works for them. I’ve suggested my husband and I go to the gym. I buy workout programs, games for the wii, watch exercise programs and sit through infomercials swearing I can be that motivated.  I even talked my way into getting a treadmill, which is sitting just yards from me now with a neat treadmill desk I built myself… no excuses for exercising here.

10 reasons not to exercise
(no, I didn’t draw this)

Oh but there are! Yes, Plenty of excuses (invalid reasons) not to exercise right here. Feel free to borrow this for your own lazy use too…

  1. I don’t want to exercise alone, it’s just no fun walking around by myself. (yet I manage to sit here talking to myself all day, go figure).
  2. I don’t want to exercise with other people… I’m too out of shape and can’t catch my breath enough to have a conversation so then I feel lame walking in silence.
  3. If I workout in the morning, I have to take a shower and get ready before I can sit down to work… and I have a lot of work to do. I can’t possibly spare the extra 60 minute work out and the 30 minute shower in the same day, can I?
  4. If I work out at night I have to take a shower AND dry my hair before I go to bed because I can’t sleep on wet hair… the hair dryer might wake up everyone else.
  5. I like buying bigger jeans- haven’t you seen Eat, Pray, Love? One of my favorite lines ever!
  6. The treadmill is too noisy.
  7. The treadmill is too boring.
  8. The treadmill isn’t even set up right now.
  9. I’m always sore after exercising and I don’t feel like being sore today.
  10. I haven’t had breakfast yet, isn’t it unhealthy to exercise on an empty stomach?
  11. I just ate breakfast, I don’t want to cramp up.
  12. I really don’t want to spend money on a whole new wardrobe right now, I’m saving for new wood floors.
  13. I get bored working out listening to my muscles yell back.
  14. I’m too old.
  15. I’m not sure which exercises to do.
  16. Walking takes too long.
  17. Running hurts my knees.
  18. Yoga looks painful.
  19. I don’t have a gym membership.
  20. I can’t afford a gym membership.
  21. I don’t like the gym.
  22. My husband’s comfy jeans won’t fit me anymore if I lose weight.
  23. I might not recognize myself and then I’ll just be confused with my own identity.
  24. I might not be so tired, so then what will I do during my daily nap time?
  25. Sweating isn’t very ladylike.
  26. I’m sure my boobs will shrink.
  27. What will I complain about if I lose weight?
  28. I might not mind wearing a swim suit so in the summer, so I might want to go to the pool more with my kids, so I might not want work so much.
  29. I don’t have any good shoes for working out.
  30. I don’t have enough room to work out.
  31. I like my butt this size, it’s comfy for sitting here all day.
  32. I really do have a lot of work to do.

If I sit here a bit longer I’m sure I could come up with more reasons not to exercise. I have friends all around me that are getting in shape and some even stop to invite me along. I really don’t say ALL those things in my head…. sometimes I say them out loud and get a chuckle so we’re all entertained. I’m hoping my enlarging butt is ok with that. So what’s YOUR reason to not exercise?
