Coffee Filter Watercolor Art

Written by: | Published: May 19, 2015 | Updated: May 25, 2016

Kids love to paint right? But have you tried making watercolor art with coffee filters? It’s not watercolor painting at all but it’s bright colors and beautiful blends. The kids will want to create art for hours! Instead of grabbing the watercolor paints, pick up a pack of water-based markers and some coffee filters and watch the fun begin!

Make Coffee Filter Watercolor Art

You can create this art inside or outside. You can use whatever colors you like. Even your youngest artist can create their own watercolor art, it really is a fun family activity!

Materials you need:

  • Coffee filters
  • Water-based markers such
  • Spray bottle with water
  • White cardstock or paper

Making your own watercolor art using coffee filters
  1. Color a coffee filter with whatever color markers you’d like. Make sure to place a piece of paper or cardstock under the coffee filter while color to ensure no color seeps through to the table.
  2. Once you’re finished coloring, spray the coffee filter with the spray bottle. You can spray a little or a lot, it’s up to you. I suggest starting out with a light spray so you can better see the colors blend. Make sure you still have the paper under the coffee filter.
  3. Set the art aside to dry. Once dry peel away the coffee filter and look at the pretty color art that is left behind on the paper!

You now have two pieces of art. You can use the coffee filters to make pretty coffee filter flowers or some other art piece. AND you have the art left from the color soaking through to the paper. Pretty cool huh?

All those pretty coffee filters can easily be made into paper flowers. Check out my Coffee Filter Flower tutorial here.

Have you played with coffee filters in your crafts before? I’d love to hear what you like to create with them!
