Buying a home and adding your own creativity

My sister was recently shopping for her first home. As I listened to her share her experiences, I was reminded of when I bought my 1st home. Although we looked at pre-owned homes, we ended decided to purchase a brand new, semi-custom home. Now I wouldn't buy a home any other way, it was such a fabulous experience!

9 years ago I bought my 1st home and before that I had always been a renter. I didn't think I'd ever own my own home, let alone one I helped design. After weeks of looking for a home all around Denver, my husband and I happened to come across an ad for an area of town that was just being built. The images were beautiful and I was sure these homes weren't within our budget, but we decided to check it out anyway and get a new perspective on what we wanted. Turns out, they were semi-custom home, fit perfectly into our budget and were exactly what we were searching for!

Buying a new home… here's how it worked:

We went to the sales office and talked with an agent. We then toured the model homes. We didn't buy right away, after multiple visits we finally decided this was where we wanted to live. We signed paperwork to “order” our new home, put a deposit on it and selected all the various options from floor plan to finishes. Then, once our home was built, we closed on it and moved in.

Adding your own creativity to a new home:

Before our home was built, we had the opportunity to add our own personal touch. We picked the lot, the model and then headed to the builder's “design center”. We selected our choice of exterior features, paint and stone as well as interior features like flooring, cabinets, fireplace tiles and even extras such as a bay window. It was so much fun!

Why I loved about buying a new home:

  • Instead of spending time repainting, fixing and updating an older home, I selected what worked best for me and like magic, it was included in my new home.
  • I didn't have to worry that my home was energy efficient. Everything installed was new and up to current standards.

If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. I loved being able to make selections to include in a home that is uniquely mine. The best aspect of being a home owner instead of a renter… I can paint and pin and decorate the walls however I like and the only one to tell me I can't is my hubby, and he wouldn't dare!
