Fun with Needle Felting and Doodle Crate

Written by: | Published: November 20, 2015 | Updated: December 02, 2015

This felting craft kit for kids landed in my mailbox just in time for holiday crafting fun. It’s from Doodle Crate (a Kiwi Crate brand), a kid’s craft and art subscription box service. The whole kit comes with everything you need to make 3 felted ornaments, even the felting tool! Have fun felting ornaments with your kids – you can add them to your tree or give them as gifts. My daughter loved this kids crafts activity and she was able to pick up the technique quickly.

Fun with Needle Felting and Doodle Crate

Felting is a simple craft in concept, but it’s takes a little practice. Doodle Crate has done a great job including information and tools for the kids to learn. This kids craft kit comes with instructions on how to place the felt and how to build each design.

Felting can be tricky, even for adults, because the needles in the tool are delicate. Just work slowly and make sure to hold the tool straight up and down.

Use the included foam block to help you create the felting projects. The cookie cutter helps to keep the felted design in the areas you’d like it. This kit comes with plenty of materials to make the 3 suggested ornaments. There’s also enough roving (the long pieces of wool felt) to practice a little. Try it out!

You can add more layers of colored felt, simply place the felt and use the felting tool to attach the threads.

My 8 year old daughter was able to create this project with a little help from me. The needle felting tool is really sharp, so make sure to keep it out of reach of smaller children. We practiced the needle felting technique for about just a few minutes and then my daughter went on her own. She had a ton of fun making this penguin ornament!

Have you tried needle felting?

Doodle Crate is a kids craft and art subscription service. If you have a child that loves crafting, art or any kind of creative, hands on projects, this is a great activity series for them. Doodle Crate kits are designed for kids ages 9-16 and come with everything your child needs to create the suggested project. They can learn new skills, explore their creativity and create fun projects to share with friends. Head to Doodle Crate and check them out for yourself!
