Faux Faberge Egg Tutorial

Written by: | Published: March 28, 2012 | Updated: March 22, 2020

Easter is full of fun spring projects and many of them are egg related. Call me ignorant, I really don’t understand the connection of Easter and eggs, but I’m goin’ with it none-the-less. Any excuse to create something fun, I’m game. So when a friend of mine was trying to come up with ideas to represent standing out from the crowd and living a life that is above the rest, the thought of an egg all prettied up came to mind.

It took me a while, but I was finally able to create this pretty faux Faberge egg. You can make one too, or 10 if you like, they’re a fun challange and you can change them up to coordinate with the decor you have for your own Easter festivities.

Materials you need to make a faux Faberge egg:

  • Plastic Easter egg
  • Craft glue – a strong tacky glue that dries pretty quick is best
  • Craft paint
  • Decorative twine or embroidery floss
  • Crafting gems
  • Triple Thick clear gloss
  • Patience and a steady hand

Steps to making your own faux Faberge egg:

  1. Prepare a plastic Easter egg by gluing it closed and adding paint to add a little dimension to the surface and cover any flaws.
  2. Starting at the top, measure out  your decorative twine on the egg by taping on the top and bottom. you’ll want to measure and temporarily place all twine pieces to ensure you have the placement and the number of twine pieces correct that you’ll need. Twine should be placed in a diagonal line down the egg.
  3. Carefully glue each piece of twine in place making sure to only apply glue to top, bottom and locations where twine crosses.
  4. Glue gems on each of the intersections.
  5. To make sure your egg stands up, use a thicker width of twine or cording and glue in a ring shape at the bottom of the egg.
  6. Apply a coat of Triple Thick to add the illusion of glazed pottery. Let dry. Repeat if desired.

You can arrange the twine however you like, adjust to create different looks. Add pearls instead of craft gems or other pretty embellishments to create a look you love. I created a variety of eggs as i was experiementing with materials. I tried self-stick lines of beads which also worked well, but didn’t look as nice as I wanted. Faux Faberge eggs are a pretty accent you can add to your Easter decorating – high end decor without the high end expense.
